How Poles Commemorate Christmas

St. Nicholas Day, Dzien Świętego Mikołaja, falls on December sixth and it is the unofficial start of the Christmas season in Poland, even though Advent, which generally begins a week in the past, is the official kickoff. Good kids receive fruit, nuts in the shell and honey-spice cookies, and bad young boys and ladies get a lump of coal.
