Another tradition that remains linked to the life of Saint Basil is vasilopita or Saint Basil’s Pie. This is simply one of the scrumptious standard foods you need to try if you are checking out in December or January. While not a Greek Christmas custom, rather a Brand-new Years’ tradition, lots of families commemorate by serving this reward after the clock strikes 12 on the 31st.
There’s another trick that makes this custom particularly exciting! Inside the pie is a coin, and whoever discovers the coin is said to have all the best for the rest of the year! The first pieces are devoted to Christ, Mom Mary, Saint Basil and the house that the cutting occurs in. After this everyone gets their own piece. Warning: squabbles might ensue for who takes the reward!!
